At Duvel Tripel Hop we use aroma hop Citra as the third hop variety. Grown in Washington’s Yakima Valley, this hops enriches Duvel’s palette with fresh notes of grapefruit and tropical fruit.
Duvel Tripel Hop with Citra
In 2007, our Duvel brewers started working with a third hop variety for the first time to give Duvel a surprising touch and extra bitterness. The result was a unique Duvel Tripel Hop that complemented the Duvel range once a year. Six Duvel Tripel Hop editions later, in April 2016 we launched a search for the ultimate Duvel Tripel Hop and initially listened to our Duvel fans.
More than 5,000 participants voluntarily submitted themselves to the blind tasting and cast their votes. Citra was clearly preferred. As a result, the second Duvel Tripel Hop ever made has a permanent place in our range. The Duvel Tripel Hop with Citra won a gold medal at the Brussels Beer Challenge at the launch in 2012, as well as the consumer trophy at the Zythos Beer Festival.
For Duvel Tripel Hop, our brewers don’t just add a third hop, but they apply the dry-hopping technique. This means that in addition to the standard hops during the cooking process, additional hop cones are added in a later phase of the brewing process (during lagering). This makes the hop aromas more intense and refined in the final beer.
